Tighten up your mountain boots

The headlines today are often so negative and filled with bad news. It’s about time for some really good news, don’t you think?  With the news and so many discouraging things that life throws at you, it’s easy to want to just give up and quit. But we can find encouragement in God’s word from Habakkuk 3: 17-19:

“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:  Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and He will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon my high places.”

God wants to give us hinds’ feet for our high places. The top of the mountain is where you can see the most spectacular view.  God wants to take us to the mountaintop of experiences of His glory!  He wants us to be like deer, leaping from mountain to mountain, going from glory to glory. God wants to do the impossible in and through our lives, using us in even greater ways than He did with Jesus. (John 14:12).

Think of all Jesus did while He was on the earth. He healed the sick, cast out demons, saved the lost. And God wants to use us this way, too!  He doesn’t want us down, defeated, and discouraged by life – but wants us going to new heights of glory in Him!

Tune into today’s podcast, Keep Climbing. Tighten up your mountain boots today – and keep climbing!

Not guilty

scenic view of lakeThis weekend our daughter Heather and I went to Springfield, MO, for Forward Baptist Church’s annual women’s retreat, where I would be speaking.  The drive there was incredible, with the mountains and the leaves changing colors to a beautiful bright red, burnt orange, and lemon yellow. Here is the scenic view of the Ozark river near Forsythe, MO.

The church’s women’s board chose a theme of “Not Guilty” for the retreat, with the scripture Romans 3: 23-24 (NLT): “For all have sinned: all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet now God in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty.”

The board had ordered black tshirts for the women, with the words in bold white, “NOT GUILTY.” They played spoons & the game Bunko.
black bagThe board had a massage therapist come in to give the women a full body massage. The house where they stayed was just beautiful, with tall pillars, oil paintings, seven bedrooms, five baths, an indoor sauna room, and an outdoor whirlpool spa tub. The women said all weekend they had done nothing but prayed, cried, and eat lots of good food!  It really blessed me to see the women’s board have such a heart for their women. God loves His daughters!

The tshirts had the numbers 4532324 [like prisoner numbers] imprinted on the front, to represent Romans as the 45th book of the Bible, chapter 3, and verses 23 and 24.  They also ordered a black bag that looked very similar to the tshirt, pictured here.

The scripture God gave me for the retreat was Isaiah 49:16, “See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.” Jesus took our guilt, our shame and our condemnation, and nailed it to the cross over 2,000 years ago.  God also had spoken to me about the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, which I will be sharing about more in the following weeks, as well as Barlow Girl’s song Average Girl (No more dating, I’m just waiting, like Sleeping Beauty, my Prince will come for me).

I noticed while I spoke that the women would laugh sometimes, when I was not saying anything funny.  One of the board members explained that I was sharing some of the exact same scriptures and words that she and the other board members had used earlier that day before I arrived, when they taught the women different classes. This showed them that God was orchestrating this entire event, since I hadn’t told the board members what I was sharing on or vice versa.  Don’t you just love how God confirms His word and how He blesses us so much by showing up?  :)

As I spoke, I shared the scripture, my personal testimony, and then about the fairy tale and the song. Throughout the night I was able to pray with several women one-on-one, who sought me out privately and who needed to just know how much Jesus loved them, that He had taken away their shame and guilt. Heather was also able to talk to some women and encourage them. I was very thankful for God’s presence and anointing this weekend.  He is so good!

Afterward, we ate a delicious, catered bbq dinner and then Heather and I were able to watch their women’s “pajama pageant” that was done in the style of the tv show, So You Think You Can Dance? One of the board members, Becky, played the role of one of the show’s judges, women at ladies' retreat Mary Murphy with her crazy, annoying laugh.  She had her loud laugh down-pat. It was so hilarious!  Winners received some nice prizes, such as pretty photo frames or a spa gift certificate.

Here are the awesome ladies at the women’s retreat in Springfield this weekend, wearing their “Not Guilty” tshirts.

me & Heather with women at retreat

Thanks to all of you who prayed for me for this speaking engagement!  Your prayers mean so much! Remember, there is no more guilt or condemnation. Jesus nailed it all on the cross for you and me! We are forgiven when we go to God and receive it, believing in the finished work Jesus Christ did for us on the cross! I want to share the story with you from John 8: 2-11 (NKJV), that God gave me to encourage the women at the retreat:

“Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them.  Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act.  Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?” This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear. So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.  When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”  She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

When you’ve lost all hope

tear bottleHave you ever prayed and prayed for something, and felt like the heavens were brass – like your prayers were just bouncing off of the ceiling?  Have you ever felt like you just had no hope about a situation?  Well, we can find encouragement in God’s word that when it seems like all hope is gone, God comes through in a great, unexpected way!

Let’s look at the story of the widow of Nain in Luke 7:11-17.  In Jewish culture in Jesus’ time, when a woman was widowed, the responsibility of caring for her financially fell upon her son or other male relatives. Now this widow’s only son had died, also, which meant not only more grief in her life, but all provision for her needs was dried up!  She might have to go live with distant family members, or worse yet, become a beggar on the street!  She had no husband, no son, and no hope!

11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. 16 Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.”

I’m sure this woman was in great pain, and felt totally alone. Her husband had died, and now her only son. There can’t be anything more difficult than your spouse or child dying.  Here this woman was, devastated with grief, and now facing a very uncertain future. How would she pay for her home, her food, her clothing? What was she going to do?  Fear stared her in the face, mocking her.  She probably felt no hope, just as we sometimes feel when we are praying about things and nothing seems to be happening.

But just hang on a minute. There’s breakthrough coming – Jesus is on the way!  Jesus had great compassion on this woman, just as He does on us. He sees our tears, our pain, our sorrow, our hopelessness. Psalm 56:8 says, “You number my wanderings, put my tears into your bottle. Are they not in your book?”  What a beautiful picture – God putting our tears into a bottle.

Tear bottles were common in Roman times around the time of Christ, when mourners would  fill small glass bottles with tears and put them in burial tombs as a sign of respect. Sometimes women were even paid to cry into these bottles during the mourning procession. The more tears produced, the more important and valued the person was thought to be.

During the Victorian period, tear bottles were made with special stoppers that allowed the tears to evaporate. Loved ones would put their tears into the bottle, and when the tears evaporated, the mourning period ended.  During the American Civil war, women would cry into tear bottles, and save them until their husbands returned from war. Their tears showed the men how much they were loved and missed.

Isn’t it comforting to think of God seeing and collecting our tears?  Revelation 21: 4 says that one day God will wipe away all our tears.  “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

Jesus didn’t want this woman to have to wait until heaven to be comforted. He had compassion on her – He wanted to give her hope right now!  So He raised her son from the dead. Can you imagine the joy she must have felt?  The Bible says that fear fell on everyone there, and they glorified God. God had visited His people.

Just as with the widow of Nain, God wants to do great, unexpected things in  your life and mine.  He wants to visit us His people right now, showering us with His love and compassion!  When you’ve lost all hope, and you feel like God does not hear your prayers, just know that Jesus is on the way to do a miracle for you!

Your authority in prayer

As believers in Christ, our prayers carry weight and have authority in Christ. Satan knows the power of the name of Jesus, and the power of prayer, and he will do all he can to keep you from praying. He will tell you to stop, it’s no use, your prayers are not working. Don’t stop!  Realize that you are a co-heir with Christ, reigning and ruling in heavenly places, and your prayers do make a difference here on earth!  Join Beth today as she shares encouragement from God’s word on the authority we have through Christ in prayer.

The brilliant hues of His character

changing leavesI went to the post office in town today and saw this beautiful tree nearby, and snapped a picture of it.  Just as the leaves are changing colors this fall, we as believers in Christ must also ask God to make deep changes in our hearts, to bring out the brilliant hues of His character within us.

God’s heart is characterized by the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:21-23:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

As the seasons of our lives pass, we should cultivate more and more of this fruit.  It requires daily dying to self. Today, let’s ask God to change our hearts to become more like His, for the glory of Jesus.

A True Reflection

Gala praying for Beth

Society bombards us daily with images of perfect, airbrushed, beautiful models on the internet, t.v., and billboards – women that we feel we can’t ever measure up to.  This image is a false one, and not one that God desires for us to reflect.

My friend Gala praying for me before I speak at Women of the Well meeting

We as women have many roles in our lives – wife, mother, grandmother, writer, speaker, doctor, teacher, construction worker, photographer, police officer, lawyer, etc.  But God’s word is the mirror that we are to look into every day, to discover our true identity – daughter of God.  It is also the mirror we look into that tells us if there is any areas of sin in our lives where we are not living in obedience to God.

Beth sharing at Women of the Well meeting

As we begin to renew our minds daily in the Word of God, we are transformed from “glory to glory.” As we spend time each day in prayer with Jesus, our hearts are softened and changed by His power. God takes out the heart of stone and replaces it with a heart of flesh – a soft, merciful, forgiving heart of love like God has toward us. We become beautiful, inside and out. God is changing us into the image of His Son Jesus!

Me sharing at Women of the Well Bible study Saturday night

At this past Saturday night’s meeting for Women of the Well Bible study, seven women gathered together to enjoy a pot of hot chili with fritos, sour cream, cheese, butter cookies, and pumpkin pie – and to hear this message of hope and encouragement.  I was so blessed to have our daughter Heather there, too!

Each day, gaze into the mirror of God’s word and let Him reveal your true reflection in Christ.

The power of prayer

boy prayingWhen a man and a woman marry and have children, they are in awe of this precious miracle of God.  Without a tailor-made instruction manual, how will they ever know if the baby is hungry, soiled, sleepy?  How will they know what the baby really needs?

Over time the parents come to know their child, and begin to learn and even anticipate their baby’s needs. They help the child learn to walk, talk, read, count, and so many other wonderful things. They provide their child with food and drink, shelter, warm clothes, a quality education, and most of all love.

The most important thing we can teach our children, though, is to develop an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.  The ultimate goal for all of us as believers is to be formed into the image of Jesus through God’s power.  Read more about the power of prayer here.

What is the best way to pray?

woman prayingAs Christians we know we should pray, and that we need to pray more. But sometimes we don’t know how we should pray. James 4:3 says we ask and do not receive, because we pray amiss.  The disciples who were closest to Jesus had this same dilemma too.

Jesus taught His disciples the best way to pray, through the Lord’s prayer.  It is in line with God’s word and will be right on target. To read more, click on my article here.

Here I am, Lord, send me

Do you want to be used by God? Do you desire to do great things for His kingdom, but wonder if He can use you with all your problems? Well, Isaiah the prophet realized he was a man with “unclean lips,” yet he prayed and said, “Here I am, Lord, send me.”  God used him mightily.  God wants to use you, too, in incredible ways for His purposes and His glory.  Join Beth today as she shares encouragement from God’s word, using the acronymn SPEAK, that He desires to bless your life abundantly to glorify Christ.
