In the name of the Lord of hosts

David Slings the Stone James Tissot c 1900Sometimes it seems the enemy satan’s attack against us is relentless.  His job is to steal, kill, and destroy, and he is concentrating on the destruction of God’s people. His aim in his attacks is to get our focus off the Lord Jesus, to steal our peace and joy and to render us ineffective for the kingdom of God.

But when the enemy comes in like a flood against us, we need to raise up a banner of God’s word against him.  These words from 1 Samuel 17 encouraged me this morning. When satan begins to attack us heavily, we need to press into God even harder and cut off the enemy’s head with the word of God.  God has called his men, women and children to be fierce warriors for the Kingdom of God.  We need to let the devil know the battle belongs to the Lord.

We walk in God’s power, authority, and anointing, and we are not afraid. We will not be distracted by the enemy’s evil strategies. We will set our faces like flint like Jesus did toward Jerusalem. We will stay broken and humble before God, staying at the foot of the cross, dependent upon God’s agape love, mercy and forgiveness to preserve us.  We know our power comes from the Lord of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel.

“Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.  This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and  I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know there there is a God in Israel.  Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.” So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead and he fell on his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. Thefore David ran over and stood over the Philistine; took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. Now the men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as the entrance of the valley and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell along the road to Shaaraim, even as far as Gath and Ekron.  Then the children of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their tents.  And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in the tent.”  1 Samuel 17:44-50

Your vital message: Building your speaking & writing platforms

wedding glovesAt CLASS speakers/writers professional training a couple of years ago, I learned from Florence Littauer that speaking and writing go together like a hand in a glove.  As a speaker and writer, you must diligently build your platform for continued success.  This is no time to sit around watching t.v., or playing Farkle. God has important work for us to do!

“Building your visibility by getting your articles published can lead to requests for speeches and other personal appearances, requests for other articles, and maybe even interest from a book publisher. Once you get on the publishing and speaking ride, success in one area often leads to demand in the other.” (Use Speaking Engagements to Build a Platform, Meg Schneider and Barbara Doyen, everything.com)

These authors suggest starting small when you first begin speaking, such as at schools, youth, business, social, and civic organizations. They encourage you to give speeches on your profession, and on what it takes to prepare for a career.  The speech should be about ten to fifteen minutes long. I believe we should speak on the passions of our hearts. If we’re excited, others will be, too!

If you are a new speaker and you struggle with anxiety or fear before speaking, you’re in good company. Public speaking is the #1 fear among Americans.  The way to cure it is to just get out there and do it!  Over time you will build your confidence, and soon you will be getting requests to speak – and paid for it. That is very exciting; your labor is bearing fruit and people are valuing what you have to say!  Sharing the things that are burning in your heart, whether through the written or spoken word, is extremely fulfilling.

Authors Schneider and Doyen say that many organizations such as the Kiwanis, Lions, and Rotary Clubs often are looking for new speakers for weekly and monthly meetings, as well as MOPS, women’s ministry boards, and Toastmasters. These are not paid speaking engagements, but they’ll give you good experience. Toastmasters is a wonderful place to learn how to publicly speak, with  immediate, helpful feedback.

Initially you will do the “pitt” work – putting in the time! That means sometimes speaking for free or for a low fee, with very few in attendance. Over time your audiences, credibility, and platform grow exponentially as you work hard to learn and improve all you can.

Authors Schneider and Doyen write that as you receive more speaking invitations, check into local radio and tv stations to see if they are interested in your content.  As you become an expert in your field in your community, you may even be asked to be a guest interviewed on a local radio show, or might receive a write-up in your local newspaper.

Explore podcasting and Blog Talk Radio.  As your calendar begins to fill up, keep up the fast-paced momentum; don’t stop!  Success draws success. You will be amazed at the divine appointments God brings into your life, even through the internet!

Make friends with online bloggers who are also interested in writing and speaking.  Leave genuine, encouraging comments on their blogs, and they may reciprocate. Offer a free give-away download of your podcast or speaking engagement for their website, which will bless your blogger friend and will give you  more exposure.

Write well-known speakers and ask for tips for how they got started and how they became successful – the do’s and the don’t's. Be warned:  they are very busy and may not have time to answer your email or phone call, especially right away!  Be patient, and don’t harass them!  Some of them may be just plain rude, and won’t bother with little “peons.” But the best ones will take time to help you! They used to be a newbie, too!

Read everything you can on public speaking. Take classes or speakers’ training. Watch and listen to inspirational speakers, and pay close attention to their speech material, vocal pitch, use of humor, eye contact, body language, gestures, and speech time.

Have yourself recorded or video-taped, and listen to the “ums,” “you knows,” and “so’s” that pepper your presentations. Work on these and other mannerism that are annoying or distracting to your audience, such as a nasal or high-pitched voice, putting your hands in your pocket, nervously touching your face or hair, pacing anxiously, reading your speech in a monotone, etc.

Speak as much as you possibly can to gain experience, to improve, and to develop your platform. Network, network, network.  This is no time to be shy and to hold back from promoting yourself in fear of appearing “prideful.”  You have got to get the word out there!

Some Christians believe God is the one who opens the doors. Yes, He does, but He also expects our cooperation and hard work. Let’s face the truth: unless you’re Beth Moore, nobody is going to call you at home, telling you they heard you were a wonderful, anointed speaker, and would you please come share at their women’s conference with an expectation of at least 5,000 attending. Get professional business cards made, make your web presence known, and spread the news by word of mouth, which is your best marketing tool. Blog, write, speak, learn, and most of all help others. You will reap what you sow.

Polish your skills continually, and ask for truthful but encouraging feedback at Toastmasters and other speakers’ training.  Iron sharpens iron.  (Proverbs 27:17)  Learn how you can improve your presentations from successful professionals. Learn from the best!

As your speaking platforms builds, your writing platform will, too.  The Devotional Diva Renee Johnson got her contract for her first book Faithbook of Jesus through a contact on Twitter and lots of hard work!  As you know, social media, such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook, is the latest rage, and an important tool and friendship-builder for speakers and writers.

Post articles on your website to build your credibility, submit articles to EzineArticles, magazines, and other online directories.  You can also attend Christian writers’ conferences such as CLASSeminars or Mt. Hermon each year.

Most of all, share a relevant, needed, Biblical message.

Problogger shared three principles he learned from Brett Rutledge to communicate effectively with others. You need to:

1.  Give me a message

2.  Make me care

3.  Give me a way to remember it

The message that we as Christian speakers have will vary with the way we say it, but will always point to one primary theme:  Jesus’ redemptive work on the cross. This timeless, vital message is why we do what we do.  It’s all about Him. His love letter is in our hearts.

As long as we keep Jesus center-stage, keeping our eyes on Him, people will be blessed and ministered to with the message, and God will enlarge our territory to further His kingdom on earth for His glory. Our platform will grow, and His message will be carried to those who so desperately need it.

God’s way: A heart for the lost

This Sunday our pastor offered us a challenge at the end of the service: “Is what you’re doing working? Is your way working?”  In my head was a big, resounding “NOOOO!”  I desire to do things GOD’S way in my life, and yet how often we as His people try to do things OUR way – which does not usually work!

One of the things that burns on the heart of God the Father is saving the lost. He desires to further His kingdom here on earth, and He wants to use you and me to reach out to them with His agape love and forgiveness. Britt Nicole’s song The Lost Get Found has this as its theme, and is just so incredible. I could listen to it over and over again!

The cry of my heart after watching this video is:  “Don’t let the fire burn out. Let the fire continually burn, day and night, on the altar of our hearts, Lord. Help us to move out of the way. Give us a true heart for the lost, God. Forgive our self-absorption and our worldly cares. Help us to take a chance, not play it safe, but to simply obey You and to act with boldness so Your kingdom will advance here on earth. Make us Your speakers of truth to all mankind, Lord. ‘Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.’ Let Your love letter be inscribed on the tablet of our hearts. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

I hope this video will encourage your heart, and bless you as it did me this morning.

Guest post: Sweet fellowship with the Lord

God's scenery

Spending time with the Lord in sweet fellowship is priceless.

Does life seems overwhelming, have you lost your direction and joy, or do you just want to be wrapped in the blessings of the Lord? Make time to sit, talk to the Lord, and listen to his words of wisdom. Hosea 10:12 says “For it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you”. KJV

I love being renewed and strengthened through time with the Lord. For me, finding a cozy place with a warm drink helps me block out the distractions of the world. “I long for Your precepts; Revive me in Your righteousness”. – Psalm 119:40 NKJV

This time of renewal should not be a replacement to your daily devotions. It is a special time to call out to the Lord and seek his guidance for your life. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to receive a special blessing from the Lord.

To experience this sweet fellowship with the Lord:

Plan

Set aside a time that you will be free from distractions. Many times while Jesus was on earth he would find a quiet place. A place he could get away from the many distractions and talk to his Heavenly Father.

Open your heart

Be attentive, willing to listen and have an obedient heart. “The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks him.” – Lamentations 3:25 NKJV

Pray

Thank God for the blessings he has given you.

Ask God for wisdom and guidance. Seek out the plans that he has for your life. In Jeremiah 29:12 it reminds us that God listens to us,  “Then you will call upon Me and go pray to Me, and I will listen to you”. NKJV

Tell the Lord all that is on your heart.

Read

Dig into God’s word. “For it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.” – Hosea 10:12 Listen to his voice of wisdom that is found in the Bible. Let the Bible encourage, comfort, and inspire you to do God’s will.

Block out the hustle and bustle of the world. Enjoy one on one time with the Lord. It will refresh your soul and nourish your mind. Make time to enjoy sweet fellowship with the Lord.

She Shall Be Called WOMAN conference

When you think of the word “woman,” what comes to mind?  Wife? Mother? Grandmother?  Or a maid? Chauffeur?  Husband’s sexual need-meeter? Mouthy, catty sister?

“Woman” can mean many things, but the greatest meaning of  “woman” is “the pinnacle of God’s creation,” as author Stasi Eldredge describes her in the book, Captivating. In the first six days of creation, everything that God created He described as “good.” After He made Eve, though, He declared His creation “very good.” (italics mine)  Man was not complete without woman.  Something was not quite right, not quite finished before Eve.  She played a very special role in God’s plans!

When God created Eve from Adam’s rib as he slept, He did not create her from man”s foot to be crushed underneath him, nor from the top of his head, to rise above him…but rather from his rib, to walk beside him as his life-long companion and help-meet.

To be a woman is one of the greatest privileges we could ever have. I love being a woman. Each day I celebrate my femininity.  I enjoy putting on makeup, brushing my long hair, painting my fingernails and toenails pretty shades, shopping for new clothes. It’s a joy to be a woman. It’s an honor and a privilege to be a wife, a mother, and a (young!) grandmother. Being a woman is a beautiful, precious gift.

Eve was the first woman.  When Adam first saw her, he marveled. He knew instantly this was his beautiful companion, that he needed her to become all that God intended him to be.  He named her “woman” because she was taken from him. She was part of him.  Eve’s name means “mother of all living.” Isn’t that wonderful?  Woman brings forth LIFE.  She has a very important role to fill!

Woman was created first and foremost to worship God, to use her spiritual gifts for His glory.  Secondly, she was created to be a helper to her husband. Third, she was created to produce children, to multiply and fill the earth with godly offspring for God’s kingdom.

I have always found it interesting that the crafty serpent, satan, targeted the woman instead of the man. There was something special about her that caught his eye. He knew that if he could get to the woman, he could destroy the entire family!  He also knew that she obviously thirsted for a deeper knowledge and spiritual mysteries, thus she was more vulnerable for his attack.  He knew if he could distract her husband for the moment and catch him off guard as the protector of the family, he would be able to get to his wife.

God in his great love and mercy redeemed man (and woman) from the curse of sin and from satan’s evil plans against the woman and her family.  God always has the last word!

Today we as women of God can walk in victory over satan and in the anointing of God, because of Jesus’ finished work on the cross over 2,000 years ago. God will give us the daily strength, wisdom and help we need to walk in obedience to His word, and to use our spiritual gifts from God to further His kingdom on earth.  We can walk in assurance that everywhere our foot treads, we possess the land for God.  We have authority over snakes and scorpions (satanic influences) through Christ.

As women of God, we have a great calling and destiny from the Lord to fulfill. We just need to hear God’s voice clearly, and obey.

If you would like to be empowered to walk in your calling and destiny as a woman of God, I invite you to attend Norma Washington Ministries She Shall Be Called WOMAN conference on January 22-23, 2010, in sunny Phoenix, Arizona.
