Needing God every moment

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the devotional Jesus Calling by Sarah Young, and bought it from Amazon a couple of weeks ago. It is so good. Today’s devotional struck home: I need God every moment.

I wanted to share it with you:

“You need Me every moment. Your awareness of your constant need for Me is your greatest strength. Your neediness, properly handled, is a link to My Presence. However, there are pitfalls that you must be on guard against: self-pity, self-preoccupation, giving up. Your inadequacy presents you with a continual choice – deep dependence on Me, or despair. The emptiness you feel within will be filled either with problems or with My Presence. Make Me central in your conciousness by praying continually: simple, short prayers flowing out of the present moment. Use My Name liberally, to remind you of My Presence. Keep on asking and you will receive, so that your gladness may be full and complete.” ~ Sarah Young, Jesus Calling, p. 55.

Are you empty? Are you in despair? Come to Him and let Him fill you.

Whitney Houston: “Am I good enough?”

Whitney Houston, in The Bodyguard

The world is still reeling in shock and grieving over the death of singer/music icon Whitney Houston. I wasn’t able to watch the funeral in its entirety, but have seen some footage of it via YouTube. One of the most powerful speeches was given by Director Tyler Perry, an anointed man of God who gave these encouraging words, “One thing I know for sure…more important than anything else she did, Whitney loved the Lord!”

Yes, I’ve read the news about her drug addictions, partying, and later in her career being unable to hit the high notes that she once could, etc. I think she summed it up well when she told ABC’s Diane Sawyer, “The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,” in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.

Or in the wise words of the apostle Paul in Romans 7:15 (NLT): “I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.”

Only God knows where Whitney stands with Him; that is not the point of this blog post. It is not our job to judge her; a better use of our time would be praying for her grieving family and friends, and to mind our own walk with God.

Whitney starred in the movie The Bodyguard with actor Kevin Costner. I was struck by his words about Whitney at the funeral. Despite her incredible fame, wealth, and raving fans, Whitney apparently still struggled with the doubts and insecurities that we all do. When Kevin wanted her to be the lead actress in The Bodyguard, her response in essence was, “Am I good enough?”

It’s a question so many women struggle with today. I will be discussing this topic of “Being Good Enough” with my special guest, Jen Bennett, on November 24 at 11 a.m. Central Time (12 p.m. Eastern Time) on my Women’s Battles Radio Show at Talkshoe. Think Healthy Thoughts

Since November 2011, I’ve been working with my first health coach, Bess Blanco of the Intentional Lifestyle. Bess has been encouraging me to make healthier eating choices, to drink more water, to relax, and to consistently exercise. Since we’ve been working together, I am now much more aware of the foods I am choosing to put into my body and of how much water I drink for optimal health.

Just as we need to be concious of our food choices, we also have to be concious of the thoughts we think. We can’t just allow whatever random thought to float in and out of our minds. “Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

What destiny are you reaping from today’s thoughts?

I don’t know about you, but Joyce Meyer nailed it for me when she wrote the book, The Battlefield of the Mind. There is truly a war being waged each day over our thoughts.

Every day affords an opportunity of some kind for us to get discouraged, anxious or fearful, stressed out, frustrated, disappointed, rejected, angry, or offended. We can respond to these situations with healthy thoughts or unhealthy, negative ones. We can think God’s thoughts – or not!

It’s important that when you have one of those not-so-Godly thoughts, that you immediately pull it down to the obedience of Christ, taking every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5), and that you renew your mind daily.

How do you do that? By spending time with Jesus and in His word. Many of Jesus’ disciples were not well-educated men, but “common folk” – fishermen, a tax collector, and Paul was a tent maker. We’re not talking about Yale or Harvard graduates here.

Peter and John were brought before Annas the high priest, the elders, and the teachers of law because they were teaching about the resurrection of Jesus, and had healed a lame man by the temple gate called “Beautiful,” and the people were astonished. In other words, what had happened was messing with the religious people and they were upset! God was not fitting into their little box.

“The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.” – Acts 4:13, NLT

By spending time every day with God and in His word, our thoughts and our lives will be transformed. We will change the way we think and we live. I wrote an article about renewing our minds for Bess Blanco’s The Intentional Lifestyle website. To learn more about how to renew your mind, just click here.

The sound of an abundance of rain

This morning I received an email from my dear friend Tony Robinson, with a video on the Scripture about Elijah and the abundance of rain, which was so encouraging to me personally. (1 Kings 18: 1-48)

The backdrop of this story is that Ahab and Jezebel are the evil king and queen over Israel, who worship Baal instead of the true God, along with most of Israel.

Elijah had given a prophetic word that God wouldn’t let it rain, and it didn’t rain for over three years. This was significant because Baal was considered to be the god who controlled the rain. The lack of rain by Elijah’s command was a sign of who was the one true God.

So there had been drought for three years. Now Elijah was praying for rain. He saw the rain with eyes of faith even before it was coming down. He sent his servant to go look for rain seven times as he prayed. He also saw the size of the rain – abundance. Not just a little drip, but a downpour!

Finally, the abundance of rain came, because Elijah prayed and believed.

After I watched this video and emailed Tony, saying, “AMEN! I receive this!”, I heard thunder outside! Today it’s been raining. I feel like that is God confirming that man’s word to my heart and spirit.

Maybe you have been through a spiritually dry season in your life, a time of lack, a lot of stress, or a difficult situation. Maybe you feel like just quitting and giving up.

Maybe you feel like nothing is happening and God has just forgotten about you. Maybe you are thinking in disgust, “What’s the use of praying any more? I am prayed out! It’s dry as a desert around here! There’s no rain coming!”

Or maybe you’ve had a little rain, like in the video below, but you need MUCH more because it’s been such a dry season.

Don’t stop praying! Pray once more, twice more – seven more times. PUSH. Pray Until Something Happens. Pray until it rains MORE, until you’re sopping wet! Your prayers have mighty power!

Pray and believe, dear friend! Have faith in the one true God, who does the impossible in and through our lives. There is the sound of an abundance of rain coming your way!

Here is the video I recorded for my Stepping Stones Intensive coaching class today. I share it to encourage you, too.

“So he told Ahab, ‘Get ready. Prepare to celebrate (eat and drink). The drought is over and rain is coming.’ “

Talkshoe Show replay with Susan Evans

If you missed today’s Talkshow show with my special guest Susan Evans, you missed an anointed and fun time, filled with great ideas for a romantic get-away with your husband and marriage tips. You can listen to the replay by clicking here.

Susan shared her powerful testimony of how God restored her honeymoon from the years of what the locusts stole from her after her pre-marital rape, and how God refreshed her husband after his difficult year, enabling them to go on a week-long honeymoon to the Bahamas for their 14th anniversary, when they didn’t even have the money!

Susan had dreamed of going on a honeymoon to the Bahamas since she was a little girl and had even envisioned the dress she wanted to wear on her honeymoon, which God sovereignly provided for her for this trip. Listen in as Susan shares about the effectiveness of your prayers.

One of the most powerful things Susan shared was that even in the midst of your pain and your brokenness (or being broke!), God is present with you and wants to bless you.  He will never leave you or forsake you.

God can turn something ugly into something beautiful and precious for His glory. He can answer your prayers above all you ask or think.

The colors of Africa: What do you long for?

The drums of Africa beat within my heart. I know that one day I’m going there. God has spoken this to my heart, that He has an impartation for me there – just as He told me I was going to Israel and Niagara Falls and had impartations for me there.

The colors of Africa….I long to see them. Lord, let it be this year that I go to Africa!

What’s in your heart to do for God? What do you long for?  Pray, trust God, and believe.

Repentance helps you to focus on your purpose

This week in my Stepping Stones Intensive Coaching class, we talked about Chapter 6 in Katie Brazleton’s book, Pathway to Purpose for Women: “Repent of All Your Offenses.”

Repentance is remorse or sincere contrition for our sins. It is, Katie writes on page 99, “regret and sorrow that leads to a willingness to change. Did you catch the word change?”

Repentance is not fun or comfortable, but it’s an important stepping stone in this journey of life.

“When we repent and move away from sin, God is pleased. When we repent, we are better able to hear Him and to focus on the purposes for which we were born.” (p. 98)

Sin can hinder or stop us from our life purpose. God wants nothing standing in the way of your intimacy with Him or the great destiny He has planned for you. This can also include condemnation for your past sins.

The visual I shared today in class was when Ray and I took our trip to Israel several years ago. We purchased new luggage for the trip, and packed both of our clothes for the 10-day trip into one giant suitcase.

When we arrived in Israel, we discovered that cars over there are much smaller (to save gas costs) and our tour guide, Yossi, was barely able to fit this enormous piece of luggage into the tiny trunk of his car. Since we traveled all over Israel, staying in different hotels, this large suitcase hindered us everywhere we went. We should have packed much lighter for this trip!

Several years ago, I became a flight attendant in Orlando, Florida, for an airline company whose smaller planes serviced Delta. That job taught me how to pack light for my flights, so I would be able to get places fast. Sometimes I would have four or five flights scheduled in one day, and I couldn’t afford to lug around a giant suitcase through different airports across the U.S.!

When we have sin and/or condemnation  in our lives, it is like us carrying around an enormous suitcase everywhere we go, slowing us down or even stopping us from traveling ~ when a smaller rollerboard would work so much better and free us to get through “the airport of life” much quicker and to our destination of purpose.

What area of your life do you need to repent of and change today so that you can move faster into your great purpose? Or are you under condemnation for past sins? God will forgive you as you come to Him and repent. Ask God to show you.
