JoJo, that is amazing. You must feel like Daniel in the den of lions. This year one of our extended family members suddenly said he’s an atheist. Yeah, he was pretty close, haha. Unfortunately, some of the kids shouted “Surprise!” BEFORE you were fully in the door so we weren’t able to record your face RIGHT when you came in at the door. Debbie was closest to the door, though, and saw you first and said your face turned BEET RED and that you were definitely surprised. So we didn’t get your face right from the door. But it still was a lot of fun!

Also, God doesn’t want you to be like a monk. Jesus said we’re to be IN the world, but not OF it! I don’t believe you HAVE to listen to only Christian music all the time (although that is what I usually listen to). Again, Jesus came to set you FREE – not be imprisoned by religion. One great question to ask yourself is, “Do I feel convicted buying this or doing this?” Asking to hear His voice. Also, “Does this violate God’s word in any clear way?” and “Would this please God?”

Hi, sorry I didn’t reply right away. I was praying about how to respond to you and the last couple of days have been really busy. All of us must hear God’s still small voice for ourselves. The way we do that is to study the Bible, which are His thoughts, and to pray to hear His voice. You would have to go to Him to ask about buying Amy’s CD. I do know that God doesn’t want you feeling constantly guilty. Jesus came to set the captives free and feeling guilty constantly is not freedom.

It sounds like you are under condemnation for something in your past, that you don’t feel forgiven for, and that is causing you to feel guilty (for other things in the present -like CD’s or movies). I encourage you to go to the Cross to Jesus – to pray and ask Him to set you free from any condemnation or false guilt. I believe that is what will help you the most with making decisions regarding music or movies. God has called us to holiness.

The apostle Paul said that “Everything is permissible, but not everything is helpful. Everything is permissible, but not everything builds up.” (1 Corinthians 10:23, ISV) That means that there is great freedom in Christ because of God’s grace and forgiveness, but that doesn’t mean that everything is good for our walk with God.

God can and does use things in this world to minister to our hearts sometimes – so He could use Amy’s music to minister to your heart or mine if He desires. I personally would not go out and buy all Amy’s CDs (I don’t own any of them), but I felt this one particular video and song was really powerful and it spoke to MY heart.

This would require an entire teaching, but I just want to encourage you to go to God and ask Him to remove any fear of punishment for past sins or any condemnation or false guilt you may be under -because God loves you and is a merciful, forgiving God. The music that I normally listen to are from singers like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Tony Bennett, Billie Holiday. . . .normally it’s jazz and big band music and some oldies music from the 50′s and 60′s. I don’t normally listen to lyrics that are explicit and Amy Winehouse’s music seems to be the only kind that is a little bit more explicit then what I would normally hear from the music and lyrics that I listen to (the lyrics in the music I listen to are clean). This is what’s bothering me at the moment about whether it’s right for me to listen to her music. I love her voice and sometimes her lyrics are poetic such as in “Love Is A Losing Game” that doesn’t contain any explicit lyrics at all but I’m caught in the middle of whether I should continue to listen to her or not, even though I know that God has called us to holiness. Sometimes I feel like I can’t watch secular movies (even if they are clean), or listen to secular music or read secular books because I feel like if I do then I’m sinning against God because it doesn’t contain His name or even mention him in anyway. I just feel so guilty and I hate feeling this way all the time. I feel like I have to be like a monk totally shutting myself off from the world, only listening to Christian music all the time (and don’t get me wrong, I love Christian hymns moreso than the contemporary Christian music out there). I even thought about getting one of her CD’s, possibly getting the clean version instead of the explicit. I just feel like I’m at the crossroads and I need some help with this issue.

I believe that what we listen to and see (as in tv or movies) is something that is between us and God, but that God has called us to holiness as He is holy. We need to hear His still, small voice in every aspect of our lives. God wants us to be in the world but not OF it. I do think that God can and does use secular things (like music, for example) to speak to our hearts about things for HIS glory. I am not advocating Amy Winehouse’s music; I just thought her death was so tragic and that she had a POWERFUL voice that was given to her by God. All we have comes from Him. He gives you and me gifts He wants to use for His glory right now. Thank you for commenting here!

Tony, thanks so much for commenting. I completely agree with you. I wish so much that someone had shared the truth with me when I was in my early 20′s and was so lost. We all try to fill up that emptiness with so many things. I wasted so much time then, but am so thankful that God had mercy on me, delivered me despite myself, and gave me life through Him. I felt that sadness, too, for Amy and for so many others. I wondered that, too, if anyone was praying for her or sharing the truth with her. You are spot on about prayer and speaking LIFE over them!

Beth thank you for the post.
Like you I mostly listen to Christian music and am not a big follower of celebrities and stars. I did know of Amy Winehouse due the ridicule about her drug/alcohol problems when she released the song rehab. When I heard the news of her passing I was hit with an inexplicable sadness. It was boulder had hit me in my core. My thoughts were centered on the condition of her soul and her eternity. I wondered did she have anyone in her life who was willing to tell her the Truth. The Truth that God could forgive, heal, deliver, set free? Did she have anyone in her life who was praying for her?I begin to think of the other singers, actors, “celebrities” out there and wondered the same thing about them. I hear so many Christians speak harshly about these people, saying things like they are in cahoots with the devil, they’ve made pacts with the devil and as a former pastor used to say those folks are paving the way to hell and leading thousands with them. I couldn’t help but think what would happen if perhaps we started praying, really interceding for these people and speaking life over them maybe we could see a change, maybe we could see a revival break out in the “entertainment” world.

We recently checked the log with Sprint to see how many texts our kids were averaging each month. I had one SUPER excessive texter, to the point that I was shocked and alarmed. Last month she sent/received over 13,500 texts. That averages nearly 500 coming and going. If we assume only half were sent texts, that is still 250 texts that she is typing out with her thumbs. It was time to have an intervention, and be the big bad ogre parents. If she can’t more than cut it in half, we will turn off the texting feature on her account. It is time to find her a hobby!

Beth, thank you so much for the wonderful review of my ebook. It’s by God’s grace and mercy that I was able to share much of my life experiences in how He guided me to a peace that surpasseth all understanding.

It is my prayer that others will be blessed through this message as well.

LOL! I was thinking about your article, Beth, and laughing to myself about Ray getting Leah to eat froglegs. Some of my worse childhood memories are about going to the Ozarks with my family (including Grandparents – loved that part) and having to watch Grandma eat froglegs. It grossed me out completely. Now you can get froglegs at Chinese buffets in Iowa, but back then, Grandma had to go to Missouri !

Candie, I bet that was hard. So glad you have a new church home. It was hard on us when we were looking for a new one, because we had been in the previous church for 12 years and it was our family! But when God says to go and move on, we need to obey! I am thankful for God’s leading and provision. We all need each other!

My family has recently gone through leaving the church we have attended since I was a little girl. My husband and I were married there, he was baptized there, our son was also baptized there and it was the only church he had ever known. The transition to a new church was difficult and we are still adjusting but like you, we are so glad to have our new church family! So glad to hear the joy your family has with your own church!!

Like the rest of the armor, the shoes were specialized as well. They were called caligulae. When the apostle exhorts us to have our feet shod, he is in effect saying “strap on your combat boots.” If you desire peace, you prepare for war. Those boots allowed Roman soldiers to travel great distances without the foot problems faced by other armies, and arrive able to battle, not needing to wait until they healed up enough to walk again.

Idols can be so subtle in our lives – anything that hinders our intimacy with God. Some of us have been raised in homes that were performance-based and based on pleasing others…and we need to find that place of rest in learning to just please God. Hmmm…. this is a message from God! Last Sunday, my pastor said that if we know God wants us to do something, but we hold back, it’s actually revealing an idol in our life. If we don’t do it because we’re afraid of what others will think, we are fearing man more than God, and have made people our idols. If we’re too busy, well, that stuff has become too important. Sometimes it can get so tricky, we think we’re doing a good thing that God wants us to do, but when we really look deeply at why we’re doing it – ouch! Susan, thanks so much for commenting. I agree we are being continually refined for God to form us into the image of Christ. (Some of us are really stubborn and need more refining than others! :O) My personal belief is that sickness originates from original sin and satan, although God allows sickness sometimes for His glory, like in the case of Job. No matter what, though, I believe we just need to keep praying because God hears our voice–and to be His hands and feet to love, heal, minister and set people free here on earth. Thanks for sharing. Sanctification is an interesting topic to study!

This is funny, Beth. I just bought a new purse and wallet yesterday and spent about an hour organizing them–because I kept losing things in my purse! I had to dig and dig to find anything–embarrassing in public : ). When I was done, I had a plastic grocery bag half full of trash to throw away that had been in the old purse! My hubby was shocked at all the trash I had been toting around. So, I totally understand what you’re saying.

One year we had a tree that for some reason was REALLY dry and when we took it down and hauled it outside, the pine needles fell off and everywhere. It was a MESS! The ONE good thing about artificial trees is they’re easy to put up and take down!

Gorgeous, Beth! I love to use the beauty God gives us to decorate, especially since I’m stingy . For my front porch I make an arrangement of gourds (that we grew), a couple of pumkins, little bale of hay and a bucket filled with sticks and tall grass from the field behind our house. I put it all together and wrap star shaped Christmas lights throughout (any lights would work, but I already had these). It’s so neat lit up at night and all it costs me is the price of the pumkins !

Hi Beth! I work with Maria. She is a new blessing in my life. We have bonded as families with that “warped” sense of humor and common life trials. Thanks for that encouragement, Susan. The book penetrates straight to the heart! I believe with all my heart that God has great plans for our lives and that it is often so much bigger than we can even imagine, if we will just yield to and obey Him. I think far too many people struggle with the opposite problem – not knowing and understanding their identity in Christ and getting how powerfully God wants to use them….But we need to make sure they are HIS plans…not ours.

Jane, this Sunday afternoon I went to a meeting in town and the speaker said she loves to pray in the early morning. She gets up at 4 a.m. each day to spend time with God and read the Bible. She said that way there are no distractions – no phone calls, no ringing doorbell, etc. LOL. Your breakfast spot with your dh sounds like it has great food…if we ever go through Carmel, we’ll have to check it out!

I like the quiet early mornings for prayer time before anyone else is up. It’s easier to concentrate.

I have a favorite breakfast spot with my hubby too. It’s called Bub’s Cafe in Carmel, Indiana along the Monon Trail. The food and the company is always scrumptious!

I am SOO proud of her. Heather attended and graduated from Youth With A Mission (YWAM) after graduating from our homeschool in 2000, and during her time at YWAM she went to Columbia, Peru, and Brazil for a month long missions trip and then to India for a month long mission. After she graduated from YWAM, she met and married her husband Kyle, and they have two girls now. When Annabelle was a year old, Heather went to Mexico for a missions trip for a week. So this is the first mission she’s done in about 7 years and she is really excited! Yes, I always do have fun with Annabelle and Violet! They’re so adorable!

I LOVE summer too – it is definitely my favorite season. I love how the sun relaxes me. I love taking walks outside. And I love caramel ice cream sundaes (which I have no taste for in the cold!)

I love being able to wear capris every day – I find them so much more comfortable than jeans.

I also love thunderstorms on a warm summer evening!

Thanks for these encouraging words. It is a good reminder to know that God has our best interests at heart. Because of that He often blesses us with wonderful things. But sometimes, He takes us through a difficult season when He knows it is in our best interest. Isn’t life a mix of the good the bad the ugly and the beautiful? Knowing that He is in charge of it all gives me peace in my soul!

Kim, our daughter Leah hears God’s voice so clearly – sometimes the things coming out of her mouth come STRAIGHT from the throne of God! But she doesn’t always recognize that she really DOES hear His voice. Just like with us and God, our children need to be trained to hear that still, small voice. I agree with you, the prayer journal is an excellent tool!

Thank you, Jane! Same here – the good books always seem to get put on hold, after all those endless chores. Will we really get to the end of our lives and think we should have washed more dishes? Sometimes we just need to leave the dishes or laundry, and go have some relaxing fun! I think we women are a little over the top on the guilt thing anyway – and I believe God really wants us to rest and relax MUCH more than we do!

I loved what you said here. SO often I reach the end of my day and think “I am going to read my book for 20 minutes before I go to bed.” Then I forget I have to iron a shirt or put the sheets on the bed or fold a load of laundry. And it never happens. I feel frustrated with no time for myself in the day. But I feel guilty if I stop during the day.

Your post is making me rethink this–I need to make a little time to rest and relax. Thanks for a timely reminder–because there will ALWAYS be more to do!

Sometimes, I think we Christian use “waiting for the Holy Spirit” or “hearing God’s voice” as a way to avoid leaving our comfort zone. Too many times, we sit and wait for a specific confirmation and that’s all we end up doing – sitting and waiting.

I agree totally with what you are saying. God always blesses me with a word right when I need it. Usually it is through His Word, which is living and active! Most recently, I read Galatians 6:9 right when I needed it. “And let us knot grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”

It is one of my passions that everyone use their gifts – men, women, and children. God does not look at gender, race, economic status. He wants to use everyone for His glory! Linda, I would not mind at all if you used it, but am not the copyright owner and don’t know what the copyrights are in using art for designing cards. I simply posted a picture of the picture, which doesn’t violate copyright laws since I am not selling it.

My husband bought the picture several years ago at Treasures of the Heart Christian store in Harrisonville, MO, which is now closed down. From the painting, it looks like the artist signed his or her name as “R Dianni,” although I’m not positive that’s what it says. The name of the picture is called “The Clay,” and you could possibly google it to find the artist online. I will look for the artist online, too. It’s such a gorgeous painting. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks. I believe a lot of the reason people don't use their gifts is because they are not taught about them and don't know how to use them. Sometimes fear also holds people back using them – not wanting to make a mistake, not being sure it's really God speaking to them, etc. I too want to use my gifts more for God, to please Him.

I really love this chocolate illustration of God's gifts. How offensive it must be for us to just ignore the special gifts he has selected just for us, and then for us to just shelve them. Lord, help me to be a better receiver of Your gifts.
