What family and home mean

“Home wasn’t a set house, or a single town on a map. It was wherever the people who loved you were, whenever you were together. Not a place, but a moment, and then another, building on each other like bricks to create a solid shelter that you take with you for your entire life, wherever you may go.” ~ Sarah Dessen, What Happened To Goodbye

Today I read and loved Emilys post, How To Make a House Into a Home. It made me think about what “home” really means.

For me, home is about my family – those beautiful, spiritually gifted, intelligent, talented, hilarious, wonderful, and, yes at times, totally frustrating, people, who God so generously blessed me with to make me grow up and be more.

Our family

Left to right: oldest daughter Heather, me, youngest daughter Leah, Ray, and middle daughter Eden

Our grandchildren: Eden's son Jacob, Heather's daughters Annabelle and Violet

Home is also about the little things, like decorating the dining table with bright, cheery sunflowers that I got on sale at Price Chopper.

You only live once and I love sunflowers.

Sunflowers

It’s also about the big things, like the birth of a baby sister or brother, a husband’s new job, a new move (right now we’re trying to buy our rental home and I’m praying we don’t have to move again!), a car accident where God protected your family, or a dream-come-true trip.

Home and family are at the forefront of my mind, since our youngest daughter Leah’s birthday is tomorrow. It’s so hard to believe she’s almost grown. It seems like yesterday she was a baby in a pink gown at the hospital. Ray loves to tell the story of how we “stole the pink gown from the hospital.” The hospital staff told us we couldn’t take the gown home as it belonged to the hospital to provide for new baby girls, but I loved seeing Leah in it – she was so cute! Ray said it would be okay and we packed it in my suitcase to take home. For years I felt so guilty about that pink gown and repented to God…but Ray loves to teasingly remind me every once in awhile.

I’m baking a yellow cake with chocolate frosting for Leah, and we have a couple of gifts for her (but this isn’t a spoiler post! I can’t say what they are yet!).

I’ve always believed that everyone’s birthday should be a special day where that person’s life is especially celebrated. To know they are loved and their life has meaning and purpose.

I had a friend in elementary school named Angie, who told me her birthday was that week, but she’d never had a birthday party in her life. I could hardly believe this, as our family always celebrated birthdays and holidays. I told my mom this and we planned a surprise party for Angie with cake, ice cream, balloons, and a gift. She cried and was so touched by our love.

Despite my dysfunctional family of origin, which I share about in my book, Promises In The Dark: One Woman’s Search for Authentic Love, this memory of what we did for Angie is one place I am revisting and dusting off to find a hidden gem.

Ideally, as Emily writes, “Family should be a safe place, a haven, a house of laughter. It should be unguarded and free, a refuge where Mom and Dad rejoice in their kids, and where the kids feel delighted in.”

That’s my desire for my family and home.

“God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy. But he makes the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.” ~ Psalm 68:6, NLT

I like Emily’s questions on her blog post and am going to re-post them here for you and me to think and journal about.

Feel free to leave your comments below.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

  1. What does “home” mean to you? Does it conjure up cozy feelings, or feelings of loneliness and isolation?
  2. Do you feel you’ve been homesick or homeless your whole life? Why/why not?
  3. Hospitality means helping someone to leave your house feeling better about themselves than when they came. How should we live, knowing this world is NOT in fact our home? How can we practice hospitality –in our daily lives, whether it’s at high school, college, in the business world or in a house– in a way that represents the kingdom of heaven?
  4. What do you picture when you think of heaven? Does it feel “homey”?
  5. Are you wanting to revisit the past and dust off places that “home” means to you? If not, why?

Pics of our new home!

I’m so excited because we’ve been praying for awhile now for a new rental home ~ and we found one! I LOVE it and am SO thankful to God for it.

I am still getting my new office ready, and we still have to buy some new furniture for our dining room and front entry room, but we are settling in. I wanted to show you how God has so graciously BLESSED us.

As you walk through the back door, there’s a utility room for coats and muddy or snowy shoes or boots.

The bright butterfly decorations, which Ray bought as a souvenir for me on one of his Haiti trips, brightens the walls.

This room also has a little sink and cabinet for storage, where I’ve put Leah’s paint and drawing supplies and some of my office supplies on the shelves.

The utility room also has a little closet for storage of a broom, a mop, and cleaning supplies, which I put on the top shelf this week. For a woman, storage like this is important!

One reason I wanted this house so much was that it has a sunroom.

I first saw these in Florida when I was stationed there as a flight attendant. They are common there.

This one looks like the screened porches in the south, but has glass windows on the side. I immediately envisoned taking out the front window screens and replacing them with glass to let the sunlight stream in, retiling the floor, and adding fresh plants.

The sunroom is my “coffee with God” sanctuary room. I LOVE IT! The last couple of mornings, I’ve gone out there to pray and read my Bible. I’m planning to get new chairs for it soon, but right now I’m using my lounge chair. 🙂

The kitchen is bright and cheery with yellow paint, stone tile floors, new cabinets, pretty green and black counter tops, and several windows for plenty of sunlight.

One of the reasons I wanted this house was the beautiful Spanish arch doorways in the kitchen/dining room and front entry (living) room. I love the character and unique quality these arches add to the home.

The kitchen also has a breakfast bar, which I’ve always wanted for our kids! (We still have one at home.)  I found these cute, dark wood, saddle seat bar stools for the breakfast bar.

I’m in love with the Spanish arch doors and this painting of the red wine and the  wine glasses blesses my soul. I’m planning to decorate the kitchen in an Italian theme with paintings, decorative pepper bottles, etc.

This is our dining room. I’m planning to buy a modern, new dinette and some Italian painting art to decorate the walls asap. I love all the light in this room.

This little arch and the shelf  in the dining room are another reason I wanted this house. It is so cute! Yes, I’m easily entertained.  It was for a phone to sit on. I’m going to shop at Kohl’s or Target for a little deco.

The fireplace doesn’t work, but its pretty mantle makes a perfect shelf for my Willow Tree angels.  You can see from the picture that the walls aren’t your typical modern sheetrock. It’s a special material made in older homes.

The angel on the left is called “Blessings: Each day unexpected blessings.” Amen! Look for those unexpected blessings in your life each day!

This couple angel’s name is called Promise. Hold onto God’s promises. They are “Yes and amen.” (2 Corinthians 1:20)

Here’s our upstairs hall.  The upstairs mostly has the hardwood floors. I can only clean these with vinegar and water.

This painting of a mother and her baby is one of my favorites that we’ve had since Leah was born. Its inscription, Jeremiah 29:11, ESV, says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

I like the NIV version which says, “plans to prosper you.” And I also love the CEV version says, “I will bless you with a future filled with hope—a future of success, not of suffering.” God wants to bless you with success!

I bought a new shower curtain for the bathroom – chocolate brown and teal, squares- and a chocolate brown rug. Yes, anything chocolate, please!

Here’s Leah’s bed. The room was painted a pale blue, so we found a comfy, new, chocolate brown and pale blue striped comforter for her new room.

Leah saw a picture of trees with sunlight streaming through that she liked, so we bought that. I also hung up her picture that she drew with her graphic art tablet of the moon. We’re still hanging pics.

Above her dresser hang the pictures of Leah’s English riding horse show, where she won the blue ribbon first place. I was so proud of her that day!

I’m still working on my office, but you can get a sneak peak at it here. This weekend I’ve been going through plastic tubs.

Here’s the stairs to the downstairs recreation room – a partially finished basement. The unfinished part of the basement is for our washer, dryer, and storage.

When I first saw the recreation room, I thought it’d make a perfect man cave for Ray.

I used a pretty, cherry tree room divider to separate the “recreation” area from Ray’s office area. The recreation area is where our big screen t.v. is now, so he and Leah can enjoy watching Star Trek and other sci-fi movies.

Ray hates parting with anything and refused to get rid of a Victorian sofa we bought years ago. He also put his grandparents’ antique dining room furniture and other antiques there. I’m teasing him that the man cave looks more like a woman’s parlor right now. 🙂

If you know anyone who wants a Victorian sofa, email me at elizabethdjones@gmail.com. (Make an offer!)

Outside we have several bushes of pink peonies. Beautiful!

Over our front door we have this sign:  Our commitment: We will serve the Lord.

We will serve the Lord.

We will serve the Lord.

This is our new, beautiful home! I’m SUPER excited to be here, and just walk through the house smiling.

It’s peaceful and beautiful here. We are SO grateful to God for this blessing! What do you think? Leave your comments below.

Wild Delight: God’s love, purple tiger stripe duck tape, and a sunroom

I’m purging and packing, getting ready to move into our new rental home. This morning I ran out of boxes and sent Ray out in the rain to get some more. He came home sans boxes and when I came into the bedroom, he had on his Captain America pajama pants and was about to climb back into bed.

“What are you doing?” I asked, instantly up in arms.

“Nobody had any boxes. There’s nothing to do.”

“There’s PLENTY to do, like the garage! I’m going to find some more boxes for us!”

Don’t you love my sweet, gentle spirit? But I figure like the Proverbs 31 woman, if I can set about my work vigorously, my arms being strong for the task and holding the distaff (what IS a distaff?), it’s my job, too, to make sure my family isn’t being lazy and are getting rid of things they don’t need.

You need the right tools

Instantly I raced off in the car to make one of the stores in town give me their boxes, lol. The Family Center staff was generous with their broken-down boxes. An elderly man named Bill, walking with a slight limp and reminding me of Jacob who had wrestled with God, helped me. (Then the man said, “Let me go; it’s almost dawn.” But Jacob answered, “I won’t let you go until you bless me.” – Genesis 32:26)

“You got something to put these boxes together?” Bill asked, sorting through the pile on the floor to find me the best ones.

“Yes, good ol’ duck tape,” I said. He smiled approvingly. Everyone knows that duck tape is a miracle worker. You need the right tools for the job.

I’m moving in style

Bill loaded the boxes for me on a platform cart and told me to come back for some more boxes Friday around 11 a.m. after their delivery truck arrives. I thanked him and went back home to spur on Ray to work.

Of course, I ran out of duck tape and had to go back to the dollar store for more. I was delighted to find fashionably colored duck tape, instead of the normal, boring, silver tape – colored hearts, paint splotches, bright pink, and purple tiger stripes. Now I can move in style. 🙂 If I run out of tape again, I’ll get the purple tiger stripes. Yes, I am easily amused.

I noticed one of the boxes had the words on it Wild Delight. Did you know this is how God feels about you? He loves you so much!

Wild Delight

God has wild delight for you!

God even cares about the little things you love, like the colored heart duck tape I found today and the sunroom at our new rental home. I’ve been praying for years for a home with a sunroom!

This sunroom has black screen on the windows, much like the screened-in porches of southern homes, but I could envision removing the screen and replacing it with beautiful glass windows to look outside at the birds.

I can’t wait to move and have a cup of coffee with God in my sunroom, watching the birds, that first morning. 🙂
