The challenge but necessity of transition

As a writer, I am aware that words are containers of power and beauty ~ as well as of emptiness and sorrow. One of the most important, and difficult, aspects of writing well is transitions ~ taking the reader from sentence to sentence, from paragraph to paragraph. Transitions help your writing to be more easily understood by the reader, and show relationships existing between words, paragraphs, and ideas. Transitions help your writing to flow smoother, to have continuity.

Transitions in life are just as hard.  Examples of life transitions are:

• The first day of going to preschool, kindergarden, middle school, high school, college
• Dating/courtship
• Learning to drive and getting a driver’s license
• Marriage
• Having sex for the first time
• Pregnancy
• Miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion
• Having children
• Fame and/or sudden wealth
• New career, job, business at home, or ministry
• Aging
• Health issues
• Financial changes – good or bad
• Separation or divorce
• The death of a spouse
• Your own mortality

Whether you are the one going through an unexpected, sudden (or gradual), or life-altering transition or it’s someone you love, it isn’t easy. There is an adjustment period, whether it’s a good transition or a bad one.

The origin of the word transition is the Latin word transition, a stem of transitio, which means “a going across” – “to cross.”

You’re in transit – you’re going someplace new.

God doesn’t want you to stay stuck in the same, old place.  You’re growing and maturing in Christ. He’s moving you out into deeper waters. He’s stretching you.

What will you need for this new journey? Wisdom, perhaps. Discernment. Courage and strength. Hope. Most of all, faith in God.

He will never abandon you, no matter where you are heading. God loves you with an everlasting love. He will get you where you need to be. He will see you through this transition time. He will help you cross over to the other side safely. Just obey and believe.
