I was a stay-at-home mom and homeschooling teacher for years. When I homeschooled our youngest daughter Leah (preschool through high school graduation) our friends the Schroeders offered to give Leah a baby lamb. They have a farm with horses, cows, goat, sheep, dogs, cats, and more.
I thought that it’d make a wonderful science homeschooling project and excitedly said yes. They helped us to make an outdoor pen for the lamb. Leah loved the beautiful brown and black lamb and named her “Babi’ after the character of the baby deer in one of her favorite cartoon Disney movies by the same name. This is a pic of a sheep that I saw when I traveled to Ireland with Leah, because I can’t find a picture of Bambi right now, (I’m sure one is somewhere in my old family photo books, though!)

Each day after she finished her studies, Leah would go outside and play with her pet lamb Bambi. It was so scute. Bambi truly did follow Leah everywhere she went, like the nursery rhyme says. (Mary Had a Little Lamb, a rhyme first published by American writer Sarah Josepha Hale in 1830. The nursery rhyme was first published by the Boston publishing firm Marsh, Capen & Lyon, as a poem by her on May 24, 1830.) She loved Bambi and Bambi loved her.
Eventually, we had to give Bambi back to the Schroeders because a cold, snowy winter was coming. I didn’t know anything about sheep and didn’t want Bambi to get sick or die. This experience is a wonderful memory for Leah and our family.

Recently, I wrote and published a new book about sheep and Jesus as the Good Shepherd, and the dark, scary valleys that we go through in life, based on Psalm 23. It is called Walking With God: Through the Valley of the Shadow. You can buy it here at Amazon.
It is a Kindle eBook. I hope to get it into a print physical book soon. You can see the beautiful cover below that I had a graphic designer design at Fiverr. I bought the image for the cover at iStock. This is where I usually buy the beautiful images for my book covers. A shoutout to my amazing VA Callie Revell, who did the professional edit of my manuscript.
Are you walking through a valley right now? Your valley may be:
- marriage conflict, separation, or divorce;
- problems in your ministry, your online biz or at work;
- financial struggles;
- a health issue;
- the loss of a loved one;
- a natural disaster;
- other unexpected crisis.
I am going through a dark, scary valley right now.
I’m choosing to trust God and to stand on His eternal word. I’ve been through many valleys in my life. God is faithful. He loves you and me. Notice what Psalm 23 says, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” THROUGH.
That means that God isn’t going to leave us there. He will see us safely through that valley to the other side, with Jesus as our Good Shepherd guiding us.
